Your people with you when it doesn't feel right

Noodknop (Dutch for emergency button) will be a quick way to reach your own people during a night out, and the care team of the place you are at. We are building it with organisers and support services.

There is no date yet. Everything on this page is a plan and can still change.

Who it is for

Women more often feel unsafe on a night out.

We build Noodknop with them in mind, and everyone can use it.

You do not have to explain or prove anything. An 18+ account and a confirmed phone number are enough.

What Noodknop will be

Your own people first, then help on site. Never a message to strangers.

  1. Your own people

One to five people you choose and who said yes themselves. They see your live location until you tap that you are safe.

    Planned
  2. The care team on site

At an event that takes part, your alert also goes to the care team or emergency contact the organiser set for that night.

    Planned
  3. A night team

Trained people, only when someone is really there. You see that beforehand. Without staff we promise nothing.

    Maybe later

How it should work

Short and simple, even with your heart in your throat.

A sketch of the idea, not a screen from the app.
  1. Set up

You choose your people, they accept your invite and you confirm your number with a text code.

  2. Start

You hold the button for a few seconds. Then the app counts down five seconds, so a press by accident can still be stopped.

  3. Your people see you

They get a notification and see where you are. At an event that takes part, the organiser's emergency contact too.

  4. I'm safe

You close it and your location is no longer shared. After two hours the app asks whether it should keep going.

This is the design. A lawyer and a privacy assessment (DPIA) look at it first, then we try it out in a few places.

What Noodknop will not do

Just as important as what it does.

  • No message to strangers

Not to everyone nearby, not to other people at the same night either. That way someone you are afraid of does not get it.

  • No location for people you did not choose

Your exact location only goes to your own people. A care team only sees where you are on their grounds.

  • Not an emergency service

It does not replace 112, the police or first aid. And we do not promise that someone always responds.

  • Not a way to report someone

You do not describe another person or report a crime through the app. That goes through the police.

  • Not always on

Your location is only shared during an alert you start yourself.

Your privacy, in plain words

Someone who feels unsafe deserves the most careful app there is. This is the plan.

Location
Only during an alert you start. Never outside it, not in the background either.
How long
Your location trail is gone 72 hours after the alert closes. A short record (time, rough place, outcome) we keep for twelve months, against abuse. After that, only counts.
Who looked
Every time someone opens your alert, we record it, and you can see it. We keep that log for 24 months.
The care team
Sees your first name, where you are on their grounds and what you type, like 'red jacket, by bar 2'. Not your number or profile.
Your phone number
So nobody can raise an alarm anonymously. Nobody else sees it, never for advertising. Turn it off and we delete it within 30 days.
What we do not ask
Why you press, what happened or who did it. No gender, address or medical details either.

Sometimes the law requires a platform to inform the police, for example when someone's life is in danger. How that works, a lawyer checks first, and it will be in the privacy statement.

Also planned: lighter help

Often you need no alarm, just a way out or someone keeping an eye on you.

  • Fake call

An incoming call that looks real, with a name and a time you choose. A polite way out, entirely on your phone.

    Planned
  • Getting home

You say what time you will be home and who may know. If you do not tap 'I'm home', the app asks you first. Only then does your contact get your last location.

    Planned

What you can do today

Noodknop is not here yet. These are.

  • In danger

Day and night. Your phone sends your location by itself.

    Call 112

  • Police, no emergency

    When it is not urgent.

    0900-8844 (NL)101 (BE)

  • After sexual violence

Centrum Seksueel Geweld, day and night, free and anonymous. In Belgium also the Sexual Assault Care Centres.

    0800-0188 (NL)1712 (BE)

  • On your phone

Check In on iPhone (in Messages) and Safety Check on Android share your location if you do not arrive on time.

  • On site

Tell the staff, security or the care team. They are there for you.

In the PartyPPL iPhone app, which is not in the App Store yet, your event will show a Veilig uitgaan (safe night out) block on the day itself: the first aid and water points on the map, 112, your last train and 'I'm home' to your group.

Build it with us

Noodknop only works with the people already on the floor. We are not building this alone.

Organisers and venues

Do you have a care or awareness team? Become a pilot partner. For the first round we are looking for a festival and a few clubs in one city.

  • One or more emergency contacts per event, with the hours they can be reached.
  • Your team only sees alerts from your own grounds, during your own night. Every view is logged.
  • We provide the line, you provide the people. No new army, no vigilantes.

Something you can do today: put your first aid posts and water points on your event's map in the portal.

Care and support organisations

Do you work at a care organisation, a helpline, a municipality or an alarm centre? Help us with the wording, the training of care teams or a role at night.

Questions

Can I use Noodknop yet?

No. Noodknop is in development and not available yet, and there is no date. In danger, call 112.

Why does it take a while?

Because it is about your location and your safety. First a lawyer and a privacy assessment (DPIA) check the plan and we talk to organisers and support services. Then a trial in a few places.

Does Noodknop replace 112?

No, never. In danger you call 112. Noodknop is for your own people and the team on site, next to 112.

Do people nearby get my alert?

No. No strangers, no other people at the same night. Only the people you choose, and at an event that takes part the organiser's emergency contact.

Does the organiser see where I am?

Only if you send an alert at their event, and only where you are on their grounds. Not afterwards and not on other nights.

Is it only for women?

No. Women more often feel unsafe on a night out, so we build it with them in mind. Everyone can use it, and you do not have to explain anything.

What if I press it by accident?

Then you stop it during the countdown, or you tap 'I'm safe'. An accident is never a problem.
